(The following terms are from the book, "Inclusion: Diversity, the New Workplace and the Will to Change" by Jennifer Brown).

  • Covering: "downplaying a known stigmatized identity". 

  • Minority: "any group or member of a group whose social identity is underrepresented in the workplace, especially relative to its general population".

  • Stereotype threat: "the sense that one might be judged in terms of negative stereotypes about one's group instead of on personal merit".

  • Unconscious bias: "our set of attitudes toward and stereotypes of other social groups that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious way, especially negatively".

  • Disability: "a physical, mental, or cognitive impairment or condition that requires special accommodations to ensure programmatic and physical access".

  • Diversity: "psychological, physical, and social differences that occur among any and all individuals; including but not limited to race, color, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, veteran status, education, marital status, language, age, gender, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability, genetic information and learning styles".

  • Equity: "the principle of equity acknowledges that there are historically undeserved and underrepresented populations and that fairness regarding these unbalanced conditions is needed to assist equality in the provision of effective opportunities to all groups".

  • Inclusion: "the act of creating involvement, environments and empowerment in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate".

  • Underrepresented group: "an underrepresented group is one whose members are disadvantaged and subjected to unequal treatment by the dominant group".

  • Culturally responsive: "understanding the different identity groups and structural barriers some of these groups may endure in your workplace will empower you to become more culturally responsive to them".
