Workplace Accommodations and Practices for Veterans

Figure 1

Accommodation:

One accommodation that organizations could have, to assist veterans in the workplace, would be the ability to support them in the transitional process from military to civilian workplaces. According to Apple (2021), the company has increased its' population of (see Figure 1) in helping "...newly hired veterans find long-term success at Apple through career development and mentorship programs" (https://www.apple.com/diversity/).

By other organizations incorporating transitional and development programs, as a part of their hiring and training process, the levels of inclusivity between veterans and non-veterans could be strengthened. Guaranteeing that organizations provide transitional support, veterans and non-veteran employees could concentrate more on creativity and innovation, as they would be educated on how to support and work with each other.

Practice:

A practice to assist veterans in the workplace would go in to the direction that the organization, The National Center for Big Technology Information, advocates towards. According to them, organizations need to deliver "a conceptual framework intended to explain how organizations can promote the effective utilization of veterans ' talents while also having a positive impact on veterans' lives through work" (2020, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7342076/).

Other organizations could incorporate this practice by giving their corporate officials and department managers the task of focusing on three main focal points. Understanding the needs and wants of their departments, discussing how best to utilize the skills of veterans, and suggesting the course of action to making them feel valued. Assigning and revisiting the performance of conceptual map outlooks could result in making veteran employees feel accepted. This would then be beneficial to their co-workers and employers. By creating conceptual maps, this helps all employees to come together and think as a team. By utilizing the knowledge and skills a veteran has learned during their time in service, both the company and its' veteran employees can achieve a higher human capital. Due to their focus, experience having a high level of responsibility, and experience in teams, veterans can have the opportunity to gain higher than entry and middle level positions.
